East End Pediatrics Services

Contacting Our Office

You may call during office hours to speak to a nurse for advice on symptom management at home or whether your child’s condition requires an office visit. Many problems cannot be handled safely over the phone and we may ask you to bring your child in so we can evaluate their condition. We cannot prescribe antibiotics over the phone without examining your child. Messages left for the nurse are usually returned within three hours. Please state the urgency of the call when leaving a message so it can be responded to in the most appropriate time frame.  Messages left for the doctor will usually be returned the same day. Non-urgent messages, including requests to schedule a check up, can be sent via the patient portal.

In addition to routine medical visits to address symptoms or illness we offer:
  • Comprehensive preventive services and screening for:
    • vision and hearing abnormalities
    • developmental delays
    • autism
    • post partum depression
  • in office clinical lab with most results available at the time of the visit
  • diagnostic testing by finger stick and draw blood on site
  • many emergency and surgical procedures performed on site
  • transfer to accepting hospital via ambulance as necessary
  • Urgent/emergency visits to treat most injuries and conditions, with lab and x-ray facilities onsite
  • Asthma education and maintenance visits
  • Routine gynecologic visits for adolescents
  • Pre-travel visits for health and safety advice and immunization review
  • Prenatal visits for expecting parents
  • Ear piercing

In-Office Lab

We routinely perform a number of tests in our CLIA-certified office lab. If you have any concerns or questions about our procedures, please speak with our office manager. You can also speak directly with CLIA, the regulatory organization, by calling 877-267-2323.

Referrals

When requesting a referral to a specialist, our doctor must be familiar with the medical condition for which the referral is needed in order to approve it and fill out the necessary clinical information. This usually requires a visit to our office. If you are unsure if you are required to obtain a referral prior to visiting a specialist, please call your insurance company and speak with a customer service representative. Please allow at least two business days for us to process the paperwork.

Parental Consent for Care

All adults involved in the care of the child are encouraged to be part of office visits. However, any adult who is not the child’s parent must have written permission, from the parent, to bring the child in for medical care.

Prenatal Counseling

This is an opportunity for the expectant parents to meet with the pediatrician before your child is born and for your questions to be answered. The fee for this service is available upon request.

Divorce

It is our policy to discuss a child’s care with both parents. We cannot guarantee the information regarding a child’s care will be kept from the non-custodial parent. The parent who brings the child to the office is responsible for the bill, regardless of any arrangement between the parents.

Parental Satisfaction Surveys

We welcome your comments and suggestions. Please ask for the location of our suggestion box and complete the survey, anonymously if you prefer.

After Hours

The doctors take emergency calls from their homes after hours. Call the main office number, 631-324-8030, and our answering service will page a doctor to call you back. Your message should include your name, your child's name and age and a call back number.  Please save routine questions (mild illness, appointments, prescription refills) for the morning. We encourage you to refer to our website first, when practical, before calling the office.

Appointments

Please make check-up appointments as much in advance as possible. We have limited availability for check-ups for children over 2 years of age in July and August, so please schedule these visits in the spring. Since check-up appointments and immunizations are often required at the beginning of the school year, it is best to plan ahead. If you would like more than one child seen, please notify us in advance so we may best schedule the visits.

Late Arrivals to Appointments

We value your time and attempt, as much as possible, to run on schedule. However, it is our policy to see all emergencies in the office whenever possible and not refer patients to the hospital emergency room. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that we will always run on schedule. We will attempt to notify families when a delay is anticipated and offer the option to reschedule. We request that patients arrive on time to their scheduled appointments so that they do not cause us to run behind schedule and inconvenience other patients. Every attempt will be made to fit a patient into our schedule. However, priority will be given to patients who arrive on time for their appointments.

Emergencies

Dr. Schonfeld, Dr. Lado, Dr. Perry, or another practitioner chosen by Dr. Schonfeld are available at all times. All calls are answered by our answering service if the office is closed. If you do call about an emergency please state “This is an emergency,” and the answering service will page the doctor. PLEASE: keep the phone free, make sure caller ID has been unblocked and remain at home. If you do not hear from the doctor soon after calling, please check with the answering service to be sure they took down your name and phone number correctly and that your phone is receiving incoming calls.

Most emergencies can be taken care of in our office. In the case of fracture, cuts, seizures, high fevers, etc., call the office; do not go to the emergency room unless your child has been severely injured, is unconscious, or is unable to breathe. If this should occur, always call us first, or have someone else call us so that we can try to meet you at the emergency room. Dr. Schonfeld, Dr. Lado and Dr. Perry have privileges at Southampton Hospital.

Well Child Visit

To keep your children healthy, it is important to bring them in for regular checkups. We recommend that you call 631-324-8030 in advance to schedule the appointment. The list below is our recommended schedule for Well Child Visits.

Check-Ups

At East End Pediatrics we feel it is very important to have routine check ups during which we have an opportunity to review with the parents issues regarding general health, immunizations, nutrition, behavioral problems, school and learning problems and other psycho-social or developmental issues that arise. These appointments are also an appropriate time for us to provide guidance for safety and discipline, and we have found it to be a good opportunity to develop a rapport with the child, to make him or her feel welcome in our office and comfortable with our staff. We feel strongly that complete physicals done by the primary care provider with a parent present are in your child’s best interest.

An annual examination will provide the information necessary for completion of school, sports and camp physical forms. Due to the number of emergency visits to our office in July and August, we have limited openings for routine physical exams during that time, so we strongly encourage you scheule in advance to make appointments for check ups before June 30th for camp and school physicals.

Recommended ages of Preventative Health Examinations:

1 to 2 days after discharge from hospital
1 month
2, 4 and 6 months
9 and 12 months
15, 18, 24 and 30 months
3 years and older, annually

Health forms to be completed by our staff normally require 3 days for completion. The charge is $5.00. We try to accommodate requests to complete forms the same day when asked, for which the charge is an additional $5.00.

Walk-Ins

We will accomodate emergent walk-ins for life threatening conditions and severe injuries.  To minimize any inconvenience to your child, please call our office to alert us to the emergency so we can fit your child into the schedule or call in advance to schedule an appointment, if possible.

Sick Child Visits

We make every effort to schedule appointments for ill children on the day that you call us. Please call our office ahead of time so that we can minimize the time that you will spend waiting.  With the exception of life threatening emergencies and to minimize inconvenience to your child, please call in advance to alert us to your arrival and make an appointment if possible.
